Main Event: Uriah Hall vs Sean Strickland

Despite his best efforts, Sean Strickland wasn’t able to stop fellow middleweight contender Uriah Hall in their UFC Fight Night main event, but he left no doubt on the scorecards as he emphatically defeated “Prime Time” over five rounds.

Scores were 50-44, 50-45, 49-46 for the No.11-ranked Strickland, 24-3, who has won five straight. The No.8-ranked Hall falls to 18-10.

Strickland tried to establish his jab as the bout began, but he often came up short with follow-up right hands. What Strickland was doing was keeping Hall from getting his own offense in gear, but in the second minute, he started to get some shots in. Midway through the round, Strickland’s right hand began to find a home, forcing Hall to respond or get in an early hole on the scorecards.

Strickland kept the pace high in round two, and he quickly had Hall on the defensive as he bulled him into the fence. In the third minute, Hall took the role of aggressor, needing to turn the tide of the fight, but just when he seemed to be getting into a rhythm, an inadvertent low kick by Strickland brought a brief halt to the bout. Yet when it resumed, the two battled it out on even terms until the end of the round.

Hall got a little busier in the third, but Strickland took his opponent down and nearly ended the bout with a series of ground strikes. Hall weathered the storm and got upright, but Strickland remained locked on his foe until he took him down again. Hall tried to hold on to get a referee restart, but Strickland stayed busy and took the New Yorker’s back, where he stayed for the rest of the frame.

The two traded jabs for much of the fourth round, but when Hall got too comfortable, Strickland landed with a right hand that hurt him, and he closed the round with a series of hard shots in the final minute before a late surge from Hall in the final seconds.

Hall made a run in the fifth frame, trying to get the finish he needed, and he was scoring well but not hurting Strickland, who stayed perilously close to danger while standing in the pocket with the dangerous Hall. But after that initial rush, Strickland was able to slow Hall down and finish strong, ending the 25-minute battle as strong as he started it.

Witt used a hard kick to the body to set up a smooth takedown in the second minute, and he controlled matters there until 90 seconds remained. Upon getting upright, Barberena tagged Witt with a right hand and he added some more strikes in a subsequent exchange before a late takedown by Witt.

Barberena got off to a good start in round two, but two minutes in, a right hand by Witt knocked him into the fence and the Kansas City native followed with a takedown. Once standing, another right hand drilled Barberena, and Witt followed up with a guillotine choke attempt. Barberena got free and returned to his feet but was grounded once more before the horn sounded.

Barberena began winning the exchanges in the final round, hurting Witt with a right in the second minute. Witt went chasing a takedown and he got one at the midway point. Barberena got up immediately but was slammed back to the mat seconds later. With 1:45 left, Barberena was back to his feet and looking to turn things around as he landed several hard shots, but again, it was Witt able to clear his head and lock Barberena up. As the fight went to the mat, Barberena used a kimura to get upright, and there was more hectic action up until the final horn ended a fight to remember.

Chris Gruetzemacher vs Rafa Garcia

Veteran lightweight Chris Gruetzemacher earned his first win since April 2018 with a grueling three-round unanimous decision over Rafa Garcia.

Scores were 29-28 across the board for Gruetzemacher, now 15-4. Garcia falls to 12-2.

Forty-five seconds into the bout, a left hand by Garcia staggered Gruetzemacher, and he went on the attack. The veteran appeared to clear his head in the second minute, and he pressured his foe until a takedown by Garcia. The fighters didn’t stay on the mat long, and they traded body shots until one by Gruetzemacher strayed low and brought a momentary halt to the action. When the fight resumed, Gruetzemacher fought off his opponent’s takedown attempts, and late in the round, he landed some hard shots at close range.

Garcia looked winded in round two, yet after a strong start by Gruetzemacher, Garcia scored a takedown in the second minute to halt his momentum, but only briefly, as the veteran got back to his head and continued landing shots on his bloodied foe.

In the third, Garcia was running on fumes, and while he got two takedowns and had some ground control, Gruetzemacher was in charge of the action on the feet and that allowed him to get a hard-fought win.

Danny Chavez vs Kai Kamaka

In a featherweight bout, a second-round point deduction cost Kai Kamaka a win, as he was forced to settle for a three-round draw with Danny Chavez.

Scores were 29-27 Kamaka, 28-28, 28-28

Chavez (11-4-1) got a quick takedown in the second minute of the bout, but Kamaka (8-4-1) got free just as fast, and the pair exchanged calf kicks as they looked for the opportunity to break the fight open.

Kamaka took the calf kick lead in the second, prompting Chavez to up his work rate to take the Hawaiian out of his rhythm, but that just gave Kamaka more countering opportunities. Unfortunately, an inadvertent eye poke by Kamaka sent Chavez to the mat in pain and prompted a visit from the Octagonside physician, but once Chavez was cleared to continue, a low knee from Kamaka after a previous hard warning from referee Herb Dean saw Kamaka lose a point. The two engaged immediately when the action resumed, but after a brief burst, the two largely circled each other until the horn.

Chavez tried to push for the finish in the third, but key work by Kamaka in grappling exchanges kept the bout to a stalemate.

Official result – Kai Kamaka Majority Draw Danny Chavez (29-27 Kamaka, 28-28, 28-28) | Official Scorecards

The third was close, but Frey’s calf kicks and some more solid punches upstairs were enough to secure the round and the fight.

Zarrukh Adashev Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Hall vs Strickland
/

There was no feeling out process between the flyweights, with Adashev digging in with his kicks to Benoit’s leg while the Texan got in some hard punches upstairs. Three minutes in, though, the leg kicks had Benoit limping and switching his stance, yet Benoit kept throwing hard, and he was able to put Adashev on the seat of his shorts with one of his power shots.

The gutsy Benoit kept marching forward in round two, and though he got some shots in, Adashev was landing too, picking at his opponent from long range as he made Benoit chase him. With a minute left, Adashev locked Benoit up against the fence briefly, then went back to work from distance.

Benoit tried to goad Adashev into a brawl in the final round, but the Uzbekistan native wasn’t having it, as he was content to counter and make his opponent use his injured leg. To his credit, Benoit didn’t stop trying to turn things around, but Adashev’s early lead was enough for him to get the victory.

Phil Rowe vs Orion Cosce

In the welterweight opener, Phil Rowe earned his first UFC win with an impressive second-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Octagon newcomer Orion Cosce.

Cosce fired off a couple kicks to start the bout and then locked up with Rowe against the fence, taking his foe down within the first minute. Cosce controlled the action until the two stood at the midway point of the first round. Another takedown by the Californian followed, and even when Rowe stood, Cosce wasn’t letting go as they battled at close range. Rowe did get some strikes off late, but it was still Cosce’s round.
